The SKY’s the Limit: Suryakumar Yadav’s Triumph

Suryakumar Yadav

The suburbs of Mumbai have given Indian cricket a lot of cricketing talent, especially batters. To name a few, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Ajinkya Rahane, and Rohit Sharma were all born and brought up in Mumbai.

Well, the new cricketing sensation who has taken T20I batting to a whole new revolutionary level and taken the cricket world by storm, Suryakumar Yadav, was also born in Mumbai, also known as the city of dreams.

Suryakumar Yadav was an exceptionally talented kid from his childhood and used to hit innovative shots in his backyard while playing with a tennis ball with his friends. His real struggle did not start when he was a child; instead, it began when he was consistently performing well and not getting the Indian cap.

Yadav’s humble beginning

Yadav started his professional cricket career in the Ranji Trophy against Delhi while playing for Mumbai in 2010. He had an impressive debut personally, as he was his team’s top scorer in that match. Suryakumar Yadav has never looked back since then and has just kept focusing on his game, not thinking about the results.

His IPL journey started in 2011 with the Mumbai Indians, where he did not get to play a single match. In 2012, he made his IPL debut at the Wankhede Stadium against the Pune Warriors of India. He was then purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise in the 2013 auction.

He stayed there till 2017, even winning the title in 2014 with KKR. However, his IPL career shot up when he decided to open the batting and move once again to his home team, the Mumbai Indians. He scored 512 runs in the 2018 season and announced his arrival as a proper T20 batter.

After that season, Sky just embraced his talent and brought a revolution to T20 cricket.

Surya – To the “SKY”

The stylish batsman was piling up runs like a machine. He should have been given an India cap by now, but even after the 2020 IPL season in the UAE, the selectors did not give him a place in the team. He was all over the news by now, but he was not rewarded for his hard work until 2021 with a debut against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

His first runs in T20I cricket came off a backward pull shot against Jofra Archer, which went for a six. That shot had elegance written all over it, and no better shot could have been there for Surya to announce his arrival on the international stage. He was also handed the ODI cap in the same year against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Suryakumar Yadav wasted no time in reaching the number one spot in the T20I rankings, and by the end of 2022, he had two international T20I centuries to his name. Before Sky, Ab de Villiers was a 360-degree player who played shots all around the ground, but this man is even more than that.

He has played 48 T20Is for Team India till now and has 1675 runs to his name at an average of 46.53 and an astonishing career strike rate of 175.76. Suryakumar Yadav has scored three T20I centuries along with thirteen half-centuries and looks hungry for more. Suryakumar Yadav’s highest score in T20I cricket is 117 in just 55 balls.

Suryakumar Yadav’s ranking in the top spot in T20I is a testament to his persistence and hard work.

His IPL career has also grown with each passing season, and every bowler in the world fears Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar Yadav’s highest score in the IPL is 103 runs, which he made this year against a strong Gujarat Titans bowling attack.

What is special about Suryakumar Yadav?

His mantra while batting in T20 cricket, where the game moves at a rapid pace, is simple: see the ball, hit the ball. This is the main attribute that makes him different from the other batters in world cricket.

The other main difference in his batting is that he has traditional as well as innovative shots for every ball, which he can execute easily. This is why bowling against him is such a difficult task. He does not shy away from taking on the bowlers, regardless of the game situation.

He often takes the aerial route, but it does not feel even once that he is taking risks. His six-hit ability is excellent and way better than the rest. He hits clean sixes and plays risk-free cricket while playing aerial shots. His batting in T20 cricket is a different case study in itself and deserves a book.

Another quality that makes him special is that his attacking game allows the batters around him to play their natural game. It benefits the team a lot in the long run as the players start to complement each other while batting, taking the team to greater heights.

How rich is Suryakumar Yadav?

Suryakumar Yadav is expected to have a net worth of $6–$8 million, or roughly INR. 45–55 crore, as of 2023. Since 2011, Suryakumar Yadav has been paid an overall amount of Rs 23.9 crore for his involvement in the IPL. He currently gets INR 8 crores per season playing for the Mumbai Indians and is a B-grade BCCI cricketer drawing INR 3 crores as his annual salary.

Suryakumar Yadav signed a contract with RISE Global, a sports management firm owned by Reliance Industries. In addition, Yadav promotes companies, including Reebok, Garnier Men, Maxima, Pintola, Dream11, Royal Stag, and Forma Helmets.

Cricketer Suryakumar Yadav was chosen by JioCinema to serve as its brand ambassador in March 2023. According to Livemint, SKY worked with approximately ten businesses in 2022 and is alleged to have increased his daily compensation from 15–20 lakh rupees to over 65 lakh rupees.

Surya Kumar Yadav enjoys driving fast cars and has a large collection of them— his prized collection includes  Mercedes, BMW, and Audi. Surya Kumar just added a Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe to his collection of cars.

When their bowling came, Ashleigh Gardner showed everyone why she is the legend of the game as she took wickets of half of the New Zealand batting lineup in just three overs giving away nothing. This was a moment of the greatness of this Australian office.

2. Partnership between Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh versus Pakistan

India against Pakistan is always a much-anticipated clash as these two teams contest against each other only in big tournaments and not in bilateral series. When these two teams played in Cape Town, it was nothing short of a thriller.

India Women chasing 150 were in trouble at one stage but Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh stitched a partnership and bailed them out of this situation and won the match with an over to spare. This proved to be a moment of bravery and excellent performance under pressure.

3. Muneeba Ali’s century in the match between Pakistan and Ireland

Pakistan Women desperately needed to win this match against Ireland Women and that is when their opener and wicket-keeper Muneeba Ali stood up and scored a fabulous century taking her team’s score to 165 runs.

She scored 102 runs in the match at a strike rate of 150 and this proved to be the only century in the group stage of the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup.

4. West Indian Women winning the match on the last ball against Pakistan Women

The match in Paarl between West Indies and Pakistan proved to be a feast for cricket fans as it was a low-scoring thriller where we got our winner on the last ball of the match.

Pakistan Women chasing 117 runs needed 18 off the last over and had scored 13 runs off the first 4 balls but in the end, lost the match by 3 runs against the West Indian team led by Hayley Matthews.

5. England’s batting masterclass in Cape Town

On 21st February 2023, England Women’s team showed everyone how batting in T20I matches should be done. They scored a mammoth 213 runs in their innings batting first against the Pakistan Women’s team in Cape Town.

The top scorers for them were Danielle Wyatt, Natalie Sciver-Brunt, and Amy Jones. These three batted fearlessly and showed a batting masterclass. Nat Sciver was the Player of the match scoring 81* runs in just 40 balls and also took an important Pakistan wicket.

Pakistan Women were bowled for just 99 runs in reply to England Women’s 213 runs and was an embarrassing day for the whole team.

The hosts, South Africa, reached the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in what was the last match of the group stage. They received a tough fight from both New Zealand and Sri Lankan teams as all three of them had the same points but South Africa managed to beat them by Net Run
